Biography

Wong Vorravitwattana is a senior associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ intellectual property group in Bangkok, where he advises and represents numerous international and domestic clients on securing, protecting, and enforcing their intellectual property rights. He has a particular focus on IP litigation and enforcement as well as all other contentious matters, including trademark and trade name infringement, passing off, copyright infringement, patent infringement, and licensing agreements.

Prior to joining Tilleke & Gibbins, Wong worked at other leading law firms in Thailand, handling a number of high-profile IP cases before the Intellectual Property and International Trade Court. In addition to IP disputes, his experience extends to a diverse spectrum of complex litigation and arbitration matters, including employment, international trade, maritime, real estate, construction, business reorganization, bankruptcy, financial transactions, defamation, investigations in connection with Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Act, arbitral award enforcement, directors’ liability, shareholder disputes, and cross-border disputes.

Wong holds an LLM from Durham University and an LLB from Thammasat University. He is a qualified lawyer in Thailand and a member of the Lawyers Council of Thailand and the Thai Bar Association.

Experience

  • Represented a leading global American sandwich restaurant franchisor in litigation against a former franchisee operating over 100 outlets in Thailand for unauthorized brand use after franchise termination, securing injunctive relief and pursuing over THB 200 million in damages. The case set a key precedent for injunctive relief in franchise protection.
  • Represented a leading Chinese coffeehouse chain in trademark litigation in Thailand involving cancellation and passing off claims, securing a landmark judgment confirming superior rights, with trademark cancellations, corporate name changes, and over THB 10 million in damages plus THB 100,000 daily penalties, the highest award in a Thai trademark case.
  • Represented a leading global Chinese lifestyle retailer in IP licensing disputes against its former licensee for continued unauthorized use of trademarks and business assets following termination, claiming damages exceeding THB 570 million and seeking enforcement of posttermination noncompetition and debranding obligations.
  • Advised a leading Korean sandwich brand in franchise litigation in Thailand against its former master franchisee for continued unauthorized use of trademarks following termination, and successfully enforced cessation of infringing activities and the rebranding of the outlet.
  • Represented Thailand’s national energy group in high-stakes IP litigation against parties engaged in large-scale trademark registration involving over 50 unauthorized filings and secured trademark cancellations.
  • Represented a large transactional bank in its successful defense against a trade finance software provider in relation to a civil copyright infringement claim of more than THB 200 million in connection with breaches of a software license and a maintenance agreement.
  • Represented a world-leading international digital company in initiating several lawsuits against local companies for trade name and trademark infringement and obtained favorable settlements and court decisions relating to registration of name change, registration of new domain name, cessation of infringement, and monetary damages.
  • Acted for a well-known Thai music star and all members of a reputable band to defend against former band members’ claims in connection with trade name and trademark infringement.
  • Represented a Japan-based company operating franchised restaurant businesses against its local partner, claiming damages of more than THB 150 million with regard to breach of a franchise agreement and joint venture agreement as well as unfair trade practices.
  • Acted for a leading airline operator in its business rehabilitation to secure its business with a total amount of claims involved in the rehabilitation exceeding THB 25 billion.
