Biography

Aye Thuzar Hlaing is an attorney-at-law in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Myanmar office. Practicing primarily in the firm’s corporate and commercial group, she assists her clients on a range of corporate and commercial matters, including investment licensing and company establishment.

She has extensive experience dealing with the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration as well as the Myanmar Investment Commission, which has granted her a deep familiarity with their respective procedures and requirements. Through her collaboration with government bodies, Aye has also gained insight into the workings of Myanmar’s Food and Drug Administration, and she is frequently sought for her advice on regulatory affairs such as licensing, regulatory compliance, and import/export matters.

Aye previously worked at a leading international law firm in Myanmar, where she gained a broad range of experience in corporate and commercial. She graduated from the University of Dagon with a Bachelor of Laws, and she holds a Diploma of Business Law and a Diploma in International Relations from the University of Yangon. She is a member of the Bar Council of Myanmar.

Experience

  • Assisted in the incorporation of several wholly foreign-owned companies, particularly in the food and beverage and service sectors.
  • Advised a client on procedures for a foreign company to increase its authorized share capital and facilitated meetings with Myanmar Investment Commission officers.
  • Submitted a letter on behalf of a client to the Director-General of the Ministry of Commerce to obtain clarification on what construction materials foreign joint venture companies are permitted to trade in Myanmar, resulting in the ministry announcing Notification 85/2016 with a harmonized system code for construction materials that may be traded by foreign joint ventures, as well as contributing to greater legal certainty in our client’s business operations.
  • Conducted legal research on the Myanmar Companies Act and prepared a legal memo for liquidation of a client’s branch office in Myanmar.
  • Advised a client on ship registration in accordance with relevant local laws and regulations.
