In a recent post on its blog, World Trademark Review reveals that the new trademark law in Myanmar is expected to pass sometime in 2013. Seher Hussain, a journalist with WTR, interviewed Darani Vachanavuttivong, co-managing partner and managing director, intellectual property, at Tilleke & Gibbins, for the piece.

“There has been a great deal of anticipation about the likelihood that the Myanmar Trademarks and Service Marks Law will come into effect in 2013,” Darani said. “It is well drafted and covers key issues such as protection and registration of marks, trade name, geographical indication, trademark and well-known marks by Customs, trademark enforcement, and remedies.”

While waiting for the new law to be finalized, Darani advises brand owners to register their rights under the existing law, as they will then “be in a better position to renew once the new law comes into force.”
