Webinar: Ship Arrest – Experiences from Southeast Asia and the UK

On July 22, Noppramart Thammateeradaycho, counsel in Tilleke & Gibbins’ regional dispute resolution and litigation group, and Giang Hoang Bach, an associate in the firm’s Vietnam practice, teamed up with Clive Aston, former president of the London Maritime Arbitrator Association, and Tan Hui Tsing, a partner at DennisMathiew in Singapore, to present a webinar entitled “Ship Arrest – Experiences from Southeast Asia and the UK.”

Cohosted by Tilleke & Gibbins and the Bangkok Shipowners and Agents Association, the webinar was organized to provide a structured discussion on jurisdiction-specific and cross-border issues relevant to international shipping disputes and ship arrests in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the UK. In doing so, the speakers covered:

  • the role of international arbitrators and lawyers in maritime claims and disputes;
  • using ship arrests to enforce and collect on arbitral awards; and
  • the criteria and regulatory framework for ship arrests in Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

On September 28, Tilleke & Gibbins’ corporate and commercial group and dispute resolution group hosted a webinar titled “Land Acquisition for Industrial Purposes” to provide foreign companies with some insight into Thailand’s sometimes complex regulations. On March 4, Tilleke & Gibbins arbitration specialists Noppramart Thammateeradaycho and Thawat Damsa-ard collaborated with Clyde & Co Clasis Singapore to deliver an international webinar entitled “Enforcing Foreign Arbitral Awards in Thailand and Setting Aside Awards in Singapore.” During the session, Noppramart and Thawat provided a comprehensive summary of enforcing foreign arbitral awards in Thailand. In their discussion they provided an overview of the arbitration landscape in Thailand, walked the audience through required documents and steps in enforcing foreign arbitral awards in Thai courts, addressed common objections from respondents, and spoke about enforcing and challenging Singapore arbitral awards through the Thai courts.
