Tiziana Sucharitkul Interviewed by Asian Legal Business on Developments in Thailand

As part of its yearly forecast of Asia’s largest economies and their legal industries, Asian Legal Business  interviewed Tiziana Sucharitkul, co-managing partner and director of the Tilleke & Gibbins dispute resolution department, for her thoughts on Thailand’s recent developments and the country’s projected outlook. Tiziana’s comments were included in the January edition of the magazine in a cover story dubbed “The Year in 2015.”

Speaking on the rapid reforms pushed through by Thailand’s military government to revitalize the country’s economy, Tiziana said, “as one of its preliminary steps in this direction, the government has collaborated with Thailand’s Board of Investment to develop a seven-year investment promotion strategy (2015-2021).” She said that we should expect to see developments take place in 2015 to give effect to this promotion strategy. Tiziana also spoke on Thailand’s Foreign Business Act and the proposed changes to restrict foreign ownership, which were rebuffed, saying, “Thailand’s military leaders are apparently inclined to foster a friendly, stable investment climate that is in line with ASEAN Economic Community integration.”

This particular webinar was the ninth installment of the SIAC Academy’s “Enforcement of Arbitral Awards in Asia: Theory & Practice” series, which outlines arbitration law in various Asian jurisdictions and enlists local specialists to share practical understanding of how these laws are applied to the enforcement of arbitral awards. During Noppramart’s presentation, she was joined by fellow arbitration experts to present detailed information on relevant legislation, definitions, procedures, grounds for annulment or nonenforcement of an award, and notable examples of the Thai judiciary’s treatment of arbitral awards.

On October 20, 2021, Nitikar Nith, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Cambodia office, participated in the Women and Leadership Roundtable, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham). The panel discussion, which was facilitated by a moderator from AmCham, featured six female leaders from different sectors to share their perspectives on how women can advance in their careers and excel in leadership roles in businesses or organizations. The roundtable also aimed to increase the visibility of accomplished local female role models for others in the business world. The event was extremely well received, with many watching the roundtable via live stream and significant media coverage following in the subsequent days. As reported in the Khmer Times, the panelists stressed the importance of engagement and self-empowerment in forging a successful career and being a leader to others in the field. The Cambodia Investment Review echoed these sentiments about empowerment and noted that the speakers also emphasized passion and contribution to society as guiding elements in the career-building process. On October 5, Dutsadee Dutsadeepanich, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department, appeared as a guest speaker in the ADR Webinar Series 2021 organized by the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) to discuss the growth of arbitration in Asia. Titled “The Rise of Arbitration in Asia,” the session featured Dutsadee and other panelists discussing the following topics: International investment protection; Potential international investment disputes concerning Southeast Asia’s projects related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative; and Advantages of alternative dispute resolution as an effective approach for fast and fair legal treatment. In her remarks, Dutsadee provided a clear overview of significant developments in arbitration in Asia, and how key players in arbitration can adapt to the changing circumstances.

On October 5, 2021, Dutsadee Dutsadeepanich, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department in Bangkok, spoke in a webinar titled “The Rise of Arbitration in Asia.” Cohosted by the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) and the Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam (AABD), the online panel will share information and perspectives on arbitration in Asia—especially in relation the recent global growth of arbitration cases, which has been seen both in traditional arbitration centers such as Singapore and Hong Kong, and in other Asian jurisdictions offering arbitration expertise. The panel brought together six Asian arbitration specialists, including Dutsadee, who is currently the secretary of the Thailand branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is Thailand’s only representative on the Young Arbitrators Forum of the International Chamber of Commerce. Together the speakers led a comprehensive and wide-ranging discussion on developments and trends related to arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in Asia, with particular consideration of commercial arbitration, investor-state arbitration, and international commercial court proceedings. THAC and AABD are national-level arbitration organizations and are members of the Asia Pacific Regional Arbitration Group.
