Tilleke & Gibbins Lawyers to Speak on Labor Law at In-House Congress Hanoi

On Tuesday, November 19, three lawyers from Tilleke & Gibbins will speak at In-House Congress Hanoi, a conference targeting in-house counsel, C-suite executives, and other business leaders from the public and private sector in Vietnam. The Hanoi event is the latest installation in a popular series organized by the In-House Community, a unit of Pacific Business Press, and will be the first-ever In-House Congress in Vietnam’s capital.

Tilleke & Gibbins, a co-sponsor of the event, will be presenting a labor-focused workshop titled “Hiring & Firing in Vietnam: Pitfalls to Avoid.” Thomas J. Treutler, partner and managing director of the firm’s Vietnam offices, partner Kien Trung Trinh, and attorney Chuyen Hong Huu Le will share tips and best practices for hiring and terminating staff in Vietnam, and conducting effective compliance training. Other workshops at the conference will address important issues such as Vietnam’s anti-money laundering rules, the evolution of the legal function in Vietnam, and project and acquisition finance.

The conference will be held at the Pullman Hanoi Hotel, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and includes a networking lunch. Attendance is free for all qualified professionals, though space is limited. Please see the In-House Community website for more information and to register for the event.

On November 18, 2021, John Frangos, partner and deputy director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department, spoke in an online session for the Practising Law Institute (PLI) titled “Investor-State Dispute Settlement: Strategic Enforcement of Arbitral Awards.” The session was part of a three-day PLI program on international investment law and settlement of disputes between investors and the state, organized to provide legal and investment professionals with an overview of the relevant law and practice in the area of international investment disputes, and to facilitate consideration of dispute resolution mechanisms such as international arbitration proceedings against states under international investment agreements. In his session, John was joined by experts from Africa and the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe. Each outlined strategic enforcement of arbitral awards in their respective region, and shared insights on how enforcement of arbitral awards can bring a conclusion to long-running international investment disputes with state actors. In attendance were attorneys and others investor representatives from around the world who were looking to better understand the process of international arbitration proceedings in investor-state disputes. Tiziana Sucharitkul, co-managing partner of Tilleke & Gibbins and director of the firm’s dispute resolution department, spoke in two International Bar Association (IBA) webinars on law firm management and strategic direction. Tiziana appeared in her capacity as a member of the IBA Law Firm Management Committee, first in an IBA Global Showcase session on October 28, 2021, and then again at an IBA Officers’ Briefing on November 9. The first event brought together two panels of law firm managing partners from around the world to discuss the matters of greatest concern to the legal industry in a session titled “What is the Future of our Law Firms?” Together, the panelists discussed issued such as the return to physical offices, how best to serve clients, how to encourage and support collaboration among lawyers, and what pricing strategies will look like in the future. This session formed part of the week-long IBA Global Showcase—a global conference sharing knowledge and celebrating successes in law firm policy and practice. In the second session, open only to officers of the IBA, Tiziana was one of three guests interviewed about law firm transitions and strategy. Alongside managing partners from leading firms in India and the USA, Tiziana discussed how established family-run firms can evolve into regional powerhouses, taking examples from her own experience with Tilleke & Gibbins’ regionalization and growth over the past two decades. Tilleke & Gibbins will hold the 2021 edition of its popular annual Employment Law Forum, which will comprise multiple online sessions, from November 17 to 30, 2021. This year’s forum brings together leading employment law experts from Tilleke & Gibbins’ Bangkok, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City offices, and will feature a variety of sessions in three languages—four in English, three in Thai, and three in Vietnamese. The installments will cover key legal updates and practical guidance on recent employment law issues in Thailand and Vietnam, and will be of particular interest to in-house counsel, executives, and human resources professionals with operations in these jurisdictions. Some of the topics addressed will include transfer of employment, work permits and visas, termination of employment, resignation issues, COVID-19-related considerations, and others. On October 20, 2021, Nitikar Nith, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Cambodia office, participated in the Women and Leadership Roundtable, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (AmCham). The panel discussion, which was facilitated by a moderator from AmCham, featured six female leaders from different sectors to share their perspectives on how women can advance in their careers and excel in leadership roles in businesses or organizations. The roundtable also aimed to increase the visibility of accomplished local female role models for others in the business world. The event was extremely well received, with many watching the roundtable via live stream and significant media coverage following in the subsequent days. As reported in the Khmer Times, the panelists stressed the importance of engagement and self-empowerment in forging a successful career and being a leader to others in the field. The Cambodia Investment Review echoed these sentiments about empowerment and noted that the speakers also emphasized passion and contribution to society as guiding elements in the career-building process.
