Tilleke & Gibbins to Host 2017 SCG Legal International Meeting in Bangkok

Tilleke & Gibbins, the only Thailand member of SCG Legal, a legal network comprised of over 148 independent law firms in 82 countries, will be hosting the 2017 SCG Legal International Meeting during May 11-12 at the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok.

Speaking at the event will be the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Glyn T. Davies; the CEO of SCG Legal, David Poisson; and the Chairman and Chief Values Officer of Tilleke & Gibbins, David Lyman.

Representatives from Tilleke & Gibbins will also be participating in the following sessions during the meeting:

  • Thailand’s Emerging Multinationals: Strategies and Projections. In this panel discussion, in-counsel from leading Thai companies will share their long-term business strategies and market outlooks. The panelists will comprise Kristina Fischer, assistant vice president of business development and legal services at Centara International Management; Yingyong Tanthanapongphan, senior manager of IP management at Siam Cement Group; and Somboon Earterasarun, partner at Tilleke & Gibbins. Moderating the session will be Michelle Ray-Jones, consultant at Tilleke & Gibbins.
  • Fighting Fakes: Strategies to Enforce IP Rights in Thailand. Through a series of case studies, Tilleke & Gibbins partner Suebsiri Taweepon will provide an overview of the IP enforcement environment and current practices in Thailand.
  • Addressing Corruption in the Pacific Rim through Localized Compliance Programs. This session will cover how to design and implement effective local compliance programs for foreign companies. The panelists will include Michael Ramirez, consultant at Tilleke & Gibbins, and Tom Pickthorn, partner at Mills & Reeves. Moderating the session will be John Frangos, consultant at Tilleke & Gibbins.

An article in Global Restructuring Review on the Thai court’s approval of Thai Airways’ business rehabilitation plan features insights from John Frangos, partner and deputy director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department. The article reports that the airline’s rehabilitation plan has received court approval, over objections from two of the creditors. This step will now allow the airline—which has received over 13,000 debt repayment claims—to implement plan under the control of five administrators. John, who co-leads the firm’s regional aviation practice, explained a number of issues to the article’s author, including the Thai government’s unwillingness to bail out the financially troubled company, the challenges facing Thai Airways (and the Thai aviation industry as a whole) during the pandemic, and the historic nature of this bankruptcy case. John is representing many creditors of Thai Airways, and he shared their general reaction to the rehabilitation plan, noting that most were not necessary happy with it but did not object because they figured it was “the best deal they are going to get.” The full article is available on the Global Restructuring Review website.

On July 13, 2021, John Frangos, partner and deputy director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group, will speak at an anti-corruption workshop jointly organized by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and the Sanya Darmasakti Anti-Corruption Institute of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) of Thailand. The Workshop on the Prevention of Corruption Best Practices and Innovative Tools aims to give Thai authorities and business executives in the country a better understanding of the UN Convention Against Corruption and some of the best practices to prevent corruption and its damaging effects, based on the experience of governments and private-sector organizations around the world. John’s presentation is part of a session on private sector initiatives against corruption, and he will specifically focus on his work advising companies and other clients on anti-corruption compliance issues in the region. As the workshop’s only presenter from a law firm, John’s discussion will provide important perspective on anti-corruption challenges, concerns, and successes in private enterprise across a wide range of industries. The other speakers featured in the two-day workshop include personnel from UNODC and NACC, representatives from civil society organizations, researchers, and individuals from the private sector. On Thursday, July 8, 2021, John Frangos, partner and deputy director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group, will join a virtual panel on litigation in the Asia-Pacific region. Hosted by the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), the panel discussion will bring together legal experts from throughout the region to comment on litigation norms and procedures in various Asian jurisdictions. John, the chair of NYBSA’s Thailand chapter, will focus his remarks on dispute resolution and litigation in Thailand, while the other panelists—from law firms in the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam—will share perspectives on court proceedings in their jurisdictions. Each speaker will lay out some notable aspects of litigation and the court system that international parties should keep in mind when considering litigation in each jurisdiction. The moderator (from a law firm in Japan) will be able to add further commentary reflecting the situation in that country. As the world begins to pull out of the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this will help prepare businesses and entrepreneurs for an increase in trading activity by providing key insights they can apply if litigious disputes arise in the course of their operations in the Asia-Pacific region. The latest “Women in Law” report from Asia Business Law Journal (ABLJ) includes a profile of Tiziana Sucharitkul, co-managing partner and director of the Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group. The special report includes profiles of 20 highly accomplished female legal professionals from the Asia-Pacific region. Tiziana is the only person from Thailand to be included in the feature. Titled “View from the Top,” the profile of Tiziana focuses on her many leadership roles—not only at the helm of Tilleke & Gibbins but also in executive and advisory positions for various global legal associations. For instance, in 2018–2019 Tiziana served as chair of the board of Lex Mundi, the world’s leading global network of independent law firms, and she currently sits on the board of the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation and is an active participant in the organization’s Women’s Initiative Network to Success. Tiziana also sits on the International Bar Association’s Law Firm Management Committee, which functions as a global forum for leadership and management in the legal practice. Tiziana also spoke with ABLJ about the increasing profile of women lawyers that she has witnessed during her career, noting that she observed the concern about female representation in law firms grow throughout the 1980s and 1990s all the way until the present day, when more women can be seen in management positions, but are still somewhat underrepresented at the managing partner level overall.
