Tilleke & Gibbins to Host 2017 SCG Legal International Meeting in Bangkok

Tilleke & Gibbins, the only Thailand member of SCG Legal, a legal network comprised of over 148 independent law firms in 82 countries, will be hosting the 2017 SCG Legal International Meeting during May 11-12 at the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok.

Speaking at the event will be the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Glyn T. Davies; the CEO of SCG Legal, David Poisson; and the Chairman and Chief Values Officer of Tilleke & Gibbins, David Lyman.

Representatives from Tilleke & Gibbins will also be participating in the following sessions during the meeting:

  • Thailand’s Emerging Multinationals: Strategies and Projections. In this panel discussion, in-counsel from leading Thai companies will share their long-term business strategies and market outlooks. The panelists will comprise Kristina Fischer, assistant vice president of business development and legal services at Centara International Management; Yingyong Tanthanapongphan, senior manager of IP management at Siam Cement Group; and Somboon Earterasarun, partner at Tilleke & Gibbins. Moderating the session will be Michelle Ray-Jones, consultant at Tilleke & Gibbins.
  • Fighting Fakes: Strategies to Enforce IP Rights in Thailand. Through a series of case studies, Tilleke & Gibbins partner Suebsiri Taweepon will provide an overview of the IP enforcement environment and current practices in Thailand.
  • Addressing Corruption in the Pacific Rim through Localized Compliance Programs. This session will cover how to design and implement effective local compliance programs for foreign companies. The panelists will include Michael Ramirez, consultant at Tilleke & Gibbins, and Tom Pickthorn, partner at Mills & Reeves. Moderating the session will be John Frangos, consultant at Tilleke & Gibbins.

Dr. Vinh Quoc Nguyen, a partner with the corporate and commercial team in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Ho Chi Minh City office, has been elected to serve a one-year term as chair of the Vietnam Business Lawyers Club (VBLC), a leading professional organization affiliated with the Vietnam Bar Federation. A well-known figure in Vietnam legal circles, Dr. Vinh is also a lecturer at the Judicial Academy and an arbitrator with the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (VIAC). Partner Loc Xuan Le shared his thoughts on Vietnam’s accession to the WIPO Copyright Treaty (WCT), a special agreement under the Berne Convention, with a reporter from Asia IP magazine in a recent article: “In my opinion, Vietnam’s Law on Intellectual Property has already covered and satisfied WCT’s requirements, so the accession to WCT is just us acting on our commitment when we joined the EU – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. By joining WCT, Vietnam ensures that we shall provide IP rights protection at international standards, which I believe is crucial in developing Vietnam as an attractive business destination for foreign investors.” Loc further added, “On the other hand, Vietnam has a strong and growing community of artists who generate content on the Internet daily, so the official accession of Vietnam to WCT shall provide solid legal grounds to protect Vietnamese creators in the digital era. On December 15–16, Kasamesunt Teerasitsathaporn and Pongpalin Chantrapirom of the firm’s dispute resolution group in Bangkok offered a two-part Thai-language webinar series titled “Violations of the Personal Data Protection Act and Case Studies in Europe” to equip Thai businesses with proper knowledge and understanding before Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act comes into full effect in June 2022. In the webinar series, Kasamesunt and Pongpalin provided a comprehensive overview of obligations of the data controller and data processor; discussed civil liability, criminal offenses, and administrative penalties; addressed enforcement structures; covered complaint proceedings; and shared case studies from Europe to highlight mistakes that Thai companies should learn from. Asia Business Law Journal (ABLJ) has published a story on Tilleke & Gibbins’ recent addition of Derrick Khoo to the Tilleke & Gibbins regional corporate and M&A team. As the article notes, Derrick came to Tilleke & Gibbins after several years as a general counsel handling a wide variety of international corporate legal matters. He is particularly experienced in cross-border transactions and M&A deals, growth equity investments, pre-IPO investments, corporate real estate, and other corporate and commercial legal matters.
