Jay Cohen Joins Tilleke & Gibbins as Partner and Head of Cambodia Practice

Tilleke & Gibbins is delighted to announce the addition of Jay Cohen as partner and director of the firm’s Cambodia operations as of February 1, 2018.

A 14-year veteran of Asian investment markets with a decade in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Singapore, Jay brings a wealth of experience in inbound and outbound investments to the firm. His practice covers every stage of the investment process, from providing exploratory advice and preliminary due diligence, to implementing appropriate corporate and investment structures, advising on ongoing operations, and negotiating and drafting commercial contracts.

Jay has particular expertise in the energy industry, in which he frequently assists clients with acquisition of energy resources and infrastructure, handles upstream licensing and transactional work, and advises on regulatory compliance in emerging Southeast Asian markets.

More broadly, Jay is a trusted advisor to businesses on a variety of general corporate, commercial, intellectual property, and compliance matters in Cambodia, including licensing and regulation; civil aviation compliance procedures (including aircraft registration and deregistration); real estate investment structuring; resource development project licensing and concessions; trademark and patent registration and enforcement; labor and employment matters; and mergers and acquisitions.

Discussing the appointment, Darani Vachanavuttivong, co-managing partner of Tilleke & Gibbins, observed that “Jay’s depth of experience in international transactions and investment and his eight years of managing a respected professional consultancy in Cambodia perfectly complement the practice we have built in Cambodia over the past few years. We are delighted that he will be leading our Phnom Penh office as we continue to expand our client services in Cambodia and across Southeast Asia.”

Jay joins Tilleke & Gibbins from a prominent regional law firm, where he was a partner and country manager of the firm’s Cambodia operations for the past eight years. He has also previously worked in private practice in Myanmar and Singapore, and in-house in Seoul at one of South Korea’s largest conglomerates.

Jay’s arrival follows the recent departure of John E. King, who previously headed the firm’s Cambodia office. After 15 distinguished years as a Tilleke & Gibbins partner, John retired from the firm in December 2017.

Jay can be contacted at [email protected] or +855 23 964 210.
