Yuwadee Thean-ngarm Moderates Discussion on Situation in Myanmar

On February 26, 2021, Yuwadee Thean-ngarm was the moderator for a finance- and technology-focused online discussion on the current situation in Myanmar, organized by the Thai Business Association (TBAM).

She was joined by three distinguished panelists: Chana Sindhvananda, minister counsellor from the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon; Nuttaphong Visitkitchakarn, chief representative from Kasikornbank PCL’s Yangon office; and Passakorn Hongsyok, general manager of Myanmar Information Highway Ltd. Together, they discussed how banking and finance operations, technology and social media usage, and Thai citizens’ daily lives are faring during the current political turmoil in the country.

The Thai-language event, which was streamed live on Facebook, provided valuable practical business insights that have been difficult to find amid the intense interest and speculation on political developments since the military took power in February 2021. The speakers’ insights included detailed information on how banking activities are functioning during this time, the various government orders causing fluctuations in the availability of internet and social media services, and how the Thai government is caring for its citizens in Myanmar and keeping abreast of the situation.

On May 24, 2022, Tilleke & Gibbins was joined by the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT) in holding an event entitled “7-Day Countdown: What to Know about Personal Data Protection Act Enforcement” at the Conrad Bangkok hotel. The event aimed to equip the British business community in Thailand with essential knowledge to be fully compliant with the law. During the event,  Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate, and Gvavalin Mahakunkitchareon, associate, walked attendees through the following key considerations: Roles and responsibilities of data controllers and data processors; Management of personal data collected prior to the effective date of the PDPA; and Practical advice to avoid potential pitfalls. On April 20, three attorneys from Tilleke & Gibbins’ corporate and commercial group—Gvavalin Mahakunkitchareon, associate; Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate; and Pongpalin Chantrapirom, associate—offered a Thai-language webinar entitled “Personal Data Protection Compliance Preparation.” During the session, the three speakers gave a comprehensive overview of Thailand’s data protection regulatory regime to assist attendees in complying with the Personal Data Protection Act BE 2562 (PDPA), which will come into full effect on June 1, 2022. In particular, the speakers covered the following topics: Key principles of personal data collection; PDPA compliance considerations for insurance companies; Notification of data collection and data processing in accordance with the law; Managing personal data collected prior to the effective date of the PDPA; Penalties for noncompliance with the PDPA; and Comparative case studies involving the EU’s GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). On April 8, Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, took part in a webinar titled “Be Ready for Thai PDPA,” cohosted by Cisco Systems. The virtual event aimed to assist businesses in preparing for enforcement of Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), which takes full effect on June 1, 2022. In his presentation, which was titled, “Get Ready for PDPA: Timeline, Regulations and What’s to Come,” Nopparat outlined the key principles of the PDPA and its related regulations, and highlighted necessary steps that Thai companies need to take as the deadline draws closer. At the conclusion of the session, He provided attendees with practical advice they can use to help their companies effectively manage their internal system to comply with the PDPA in June.
