Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Curator to Speak at Museum Association of Thailand Seminar

On the Thai Museum Day, December 3, 2012, the Museum Association of Thailand is hosting a program, involving lectures and a panel discussion, around the topic of museum curators and their significance and purpose, at the Auditorium of the National Museum, Bangkok.

The event will be split into two sessions. The morning sessions will address questions and topics such as “What Is a Curator and Why Am I One?”, while the afternoon session will follow on with a panel discussion on “The Curator Profession: Moving in Progress or Regress, What are the Problems?”. Wipawee Tiyawes, Tilleke & Gibbins’ textile curator, will sit on a panel and will make a presentation during the event. The seminar will end with an open forum and a Q&A session.

In an interview, Wipawee Tiyawes, curator of the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection, provides some key background information about the firm’s collection, the different regions where the textiles originate, and how they can be distinguished from one another. On November 23-25, 2012, Dr. Linda S. McIntosh is leading a study excursion to observe a Chulakathin merit-making festival in Chiang Rai province. This is an opportunity for culture and textile enthusiasts to observe and perhaps participate in the Chulakathin merit-making festival taking place in Chiang Khong District after the end of Buddhist Lent. In a Chulakathin, cotton specifically cultivated for the ritual is processed into woven fabric in a 24-hour period. The woven cloth to be used as monks’ robes is immediately donated to the host temple.
