Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Curator to Speak at Museum Association of Thailand Seminar

On the Thai Museum Day, December 3, 2012, the Museum Association of Thailand is hosting a program, involving lectures and a panel discussion, around the topic of museum curators and their significance and purpose, at the Auditorium of the National Museum, Bangkok.

The event will be split into two sessions. The morning sessions will address questions and topics such as “What Is a Curator and Why Am I One?”, while the afternoon session will follow on with a panel discussion on “The Curator Profession: Moving in Progress or Regress, What are the Problems?”. Wipawee Tiyawes, Tilleke & Gibbins’ textile curator, will sit on a panel and will make a presentation during the event. The seminar will end with an open forum and a Q&A session.

McIntosh, consulting curator of the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection, will examine how Indian trade textiles have influenced handwoven textiles of mainland Southeast Asia, primarily Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. This is an introduction to textiles produced by the Tai Yuan ethnic group of Thailand. This group is the most populous one inhabiting northern Thailand and composes a minority in the central provinces of Nakhon Ratchasima, Saraburi, and Ratchaburi. In northern Thailand, members of the Tai Yuan group primarily reside in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nan, Phrae, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, and Sukhothai. Tai Yuan weavers living in the various areas have developed distinctive weavings, serving as identity markers.

McIntosh, consulting curator of the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection, will give a presentation in Singapore for the Friends of the Asian Civilisations Museum Textile Group and other textile enthusiasts. “Influence of Indian Trade Textiles in Mainland Southeast Asia: Examples from the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection” will discuss various hand-woven textiles produced in Mainland Southeast Asia that were inspired by Indian trade textiles.

The Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection was featured in today’s edition of ASTV Newspaper, a local newspaper based in Bangkok. In an interview, Wipawee Tiyawes, Textile Curator, provided some key background information about the collection, including its 20-year history, the different regions that are represented in the collection, and specific details on the weaving methods for various textiles. One particular item highlighted in the article was a textile from the King Rama V period which, at over 100 years old, is the oldest textile in the collection.
