Tilleke & Gibbins is proud to announce the publication of Art of Southeast Asian Textiles: The Tilleke & Gibbins Collection. Written by Dr. Linda S. McIntosh and published by Serindia Publications, this beautifully illustrated book highlights the museum-quality textiles that compose the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection.

To mark the launch of this book, the firm will be holding a cocktail reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on January 24, 2013. The event will be held at the Bangkok office of Tilleke & Gibbins on Rama 3 Road. During the reception, highlighted textiles from the collection will be on display, and copies of the book will be available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the textile gallery at Thailand’s National Museum.

Natural indigo has historically been an important trade item, and its use has been documented throughout the world. The word indigo is derived from the Greek word indikon and Roman word indicum, referring to India, thought to the oldest center of indigo production.

The Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection accessioned a large shwe chi doe hanging (h 1.6 m x w 4.7 m) in 2010. Pre-World War II examples are rarely found in the market; thus, the purchase was a rare opportunity to acquire a type of textile absent from the collection. Existing examples are housed in private and major museum collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Australian National Gallery, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and the Denison University of Ohio.

On July 21, 2011, the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection will host a seminar on “Tai Ceremonial Textiles and their Uses.” Consulting Curator Dr. Linda S. McIntosh will discuss various types of textiles produced by Tai Yuan weavers originating from northern and central Thailand. The Tai Yuan is the most populous group of the Kingdom’s northern region, and Tai Yuan communities are found in numerous provinces, including Chiang Mai, Phrae, Lampang, Uttaradit, Saraburi, and Ratchaburi.
