Tilleke & Gibbins is pleased to announce the appointment of Chanakarn Boonyasith as partner in the firm’s Bangkok office, further bolstering its top-tier employment practice in Thailand and broadening the strength of its corporate and M&A group.

Chanakarn brings extensive experience advising multinational and domestic clients on Thai labor and employment law, personal data protection, and corporate and commercial matters. Her practice encompasses workforce restructuring, complex terminations, employment compliance, workplace investigations, and cross-border employment matters, serving clients across diverse industries including manufacturing, financial services, hospitality, transportation, retail, education, and renewable energy. She also advises on data protection and commercial transactions, enabling her to deliver integrated solutions for multifaceted, cross-jurisdictional matters.

Prior to joining Tilleke & Gibbins, Chanakarn was a partner at an international law firm in Bangkok, where she established herself as one of Thailand’s foremost employment lawyers. She is ranked by Chambers and Partners and has been named to Asia Business Law Journal’s A-List of Thailand’s top lawyers.

On September 28, Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group in Bangkok hosted a hybrid seminar entitled “Complex Commercial Litigation,” comprising three main topics—solutions for delay and disruption claims in construction disputes, product liability, and insurer liability in policies relating to product liability and construction. The sessions were presented in Thai language and were moderated by associate Jamorn Pornponwat. In the first presentation, Noppramart Thammateeradaycho, counsel, walked attendees through causes of delay and disruption in construction, went over notable case studies, shared practical tips for making a successful claim, and covered claims under delay and disruption. In the second session, Chusert Supasitthumrong, partner and director of the dispute resolution department, addressed product liability issues. In his presentation, Chusert covered topics such as liability of entrepreneurs, burden of proof, liability and exceptions, disclaimer agreements between consumers and entrepreneurs, representatives of damaged parties, damages, and prescription periods. He also explained some of the legal procedures and steps that accused parties can take to settle a case successfully. In the final presentation, Pongpalin Chantrapirom, associate, covered insurer liability. Pongpalin addressed notable characteristics of insurer liability in insurance policies for product liability and construction. He also raised some illustrative case studies and examples of relevant court judgments.

Michael Ramirez, a counsel in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group in Bangkok, will provide the Thailand legal outlook at a Thailand Regional Forum meeting to be held at Sasin School of Management on June 9, 2022. The event will be a special relaunch meeting of the Thailand Regional Forum, an initiative established by Dataconsult some 35 years ago. After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum is restarting with Sasin School of Management as its new home. The Thailand Regional Forum at Sasin plans to hold regular meetings from July onward. The meeting will consist of forecasting panel presentations and roundtable discussions. In addition to Michael’s presentation of the legal outlook for Thailand, other speakers will offer insights into Thailand’s political, risk, economic, and human resources outlook in the coming year. Following the presentations, the speakers and attendees will participate in a roundtable discussions and Q&A to address any questions that came up during the session and to consider various potential scenarios. Tiziana Sucharitkul, managing partner and director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group, provided in-depth insights on diversity and inclusion and law firms for a recent article in Asia Business Law Journal (ABLJ) on diversity and inclusion in law firms across Asia. In the article, which was published on March 30, 2022, Tiziana offers insights gained in her years in senior leadership at Tilleke & Gibbins and as a longtime advocate for law firm diversity and inclusion initiatives. The article begins by contrasting the demand for greater diversity among Western law firms—especially by corporate counsel—with attitudes in Asia, where questions of expertise and service often take precedence when it comes to legal work. The writer then quickly shifts to investigating the reasons for this, as well as exploring the current state of diversity in the Asian legal industry today. This section of the article leads with Tiziana’s explanation that leadership of Asian law firms are in a very different context than the social tensions that catalyzed many diversity initiatives in the West. However, this does not necessarily mean that diverse representation has lagged in this part of the world. Rather, as Tiziana points out, “Southeast Asian countries have some of the highest proportions of women in senior business leadership in the world.” She also notes that markers such as gender diversity and respect for minority rights can vary widely across Asia. Elsewhere in the article, other senior law firm leaders express similar observations and provide details on the diversity challenges in their countries of focus. At the annual general meeting of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) on March 24, Pimvimol (June) Vipamaneerut, a partner in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, was elected as IPBA’s jurisdictional committee member for Thailand. In the role, Pimvimol will be responsible for membership issues in Thailand, and will be the key point of contact for matters concerning activities in the jurisdiction. She will serve as Thailand’s jurisdictional committee member for three years (2022–2025). The IPBA is a prestigious international association of business and commercial attorneys active or with a strong interest in the Pacific region. The IPBA has a membership of more than 1,500 legal professionals from over 65 countries and jurisdictions.
