Tilleke & Gibbins Nominated for Three TrustLaw Pro Bono Awards

In recognition of Tilleke & Gibbins’ pro bono practice, our firm has been nominated for the following awards at the 2017 TrustLaw Awards:

  • Domestic law firm of the year, for which we are one of only four nominated firms globally.
  • Innovation award in recognition of our Myanmar office’s work with Eyewitness to Atrocities (UK) and D.L. & F de Saram (Sri Lanka) to help the use of technology in bringing perpetrators of international atrocity crimes to justice.
  • Collaboration award in conjunction with the UNHCR, International Detention Coalition, and Save the Children, for the work that our Thailand office has undertaken in collaboration with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Skrine (Malaysia), Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung (Indonesia), and The Legal Circle (Bangladesh), to protect refugee and asylum-seeking children in Asia.

TrustLaw is the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono legal program, responsible for connecting law firms and corporate legal teams with high-impact NGOs and social enterprises working to create social and environmental change. The TrustLaw Awards celebrate the most important work being carried out through TrustLaw projects.

On February 25, Krisna Bovornratanaraks, counsel in the firm’s Bangkok office; Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate of the firm’s corporate and commercial group; and Pongpalin Chantrapirom, associate in the firm’s dispute resolution group, offered a webinar titled “The Relation between Cyber Threats and Personal Data Protection: What Thai Businesses Need to Know.” The session was presented in conjunction with Metro System Corporation, Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), and the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA). During the presentation, the speakers discussed notable cyber threat cases around the globe, the principles behind Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), the PDPA’s approach to cyberattack issues, and case studies from European countries. On February 24, Tilleke & Gibbins, in collaboration with the Thai Business Association of Myanmar and the Thai Business Association of the Lao PDR, delivered a Thai-language webinar titled “How to Export Cosmetics to Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, and Parallel Importation and Case Studies in Thailand.” The 90-minute session was led by a number of Tilleke & Gibbins’ regulatory affairs (RA) specialists: Atthachai Homhuan, director of the firm’s regulatory affairs (RA) group in Bangkok; Dino Santaniello, head of the Laos office; Ratchanee Sriplaek, RA consultant in Thailand; Saithong Rattana, associate in the Laos office; Thanathon Trakoolpolpruek, RA consultant in Thailand; and Yuwadee Thean-ngarm, director of the firm’s Myanmar office. Together, the speakers addressed the following issues: Compliance with cosmetics laws and regulations in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar; Regulatory requirements for product labels and advertisements; Best practices and success stories related to exporting beauty products; Avoiding double importation; and Relevant case studies from Thailand. On February 8, Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate, and Thammapas Chanpanich, associate, both in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, delivered a joint Thai-language webinar entitled “Personal Data Protection Guidelines for Insurance Industry.” During the session, the speakers focused on the relevance of the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA)—which is expected to come into force on June 1, 2022—to the insurance industry. Specifically, they discussed the following topics: Key principles of personal data collection; Scope of establishing the principle of legality for insurance companies; Notification of data collection and data processing activities in accordance with the law; Procedures of execution between insurance companies and their counterparties; and Managing personal data collected prior to the effective date of the PDPA.
