Tilleke & Gibbins Nominated for Three TrustLaw Pro Bono Awards

In recognition of Tilleke & Gibbins’ pro bono practice, our firm has been nominated for the following awards at the 2017 TrustLaw Awards:

  • Domestic law firm of the year, for which we are one of only four nominated firms globally.
  • Innovation award in recognition of our Myanmar office’s work with Eyewitness to Atrocities (UK) and D.L. & F de Saram (Sri Lanka) to help the use of technology in bringing perpetrators of international atrocity crimes to justice.
  • Collaboration award in conjunction with the UNHCR, International Detention Coalition, and Save the Children, for the work that our Thailand office has undertaken in collaboration with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Skrine (Malaysia), Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung (Indonesia), and The Legal Circle (Bangladesh), to protect refugee and asylum-seeking children in Asia.

TrustLaw is the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono legal program, responsible for connecting law firms and corporate legal teams with high-impact NGOs and social enterprises working to create social and environmental change. The TrustLaw Awards celebrate the most important work being carried out through TrustLaw projects.

On July 12, 2022, Nopparat Lalitkomon, a senior associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, spoke at an event on the principles of Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). The session was organized in collaboration with True Digital Park and True Digital Group (TDG). Presenting along with the head of data privacy for TDG, Nopparat addressed the following issues to equip startup companies with essential knowledge to fully comply with the law. Data minimization; Managing data security; Data breach prevention; Principles of data protection officer roles; Data subject rights; Key consideration when setting up an application; and New sub-regulations under the Personal Data Protection Act; The event closed with an FAQ session.

On July 7, 2022, Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate, and Gvavalin Mahakunkitchareon, associate of the firm’s corporate and commercial group collaborated with Microfocus and CyberRes in hosting a webinar entitled “ PDPA: Managing and Minimizing Data Protection Risks.” In this online session, the speakers covered the following items: Overview of the Personal Data Protection Act 2019; Roles and responsibilities of data controllers or data processors; Rights of data subjects; and Updates on new subregulations under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).

On June 17, 2022, two attorneys in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok—Charuwan Charoonchitsathian, partner, and Gvavalin Mahakunkitchareon, associate—were keynote speakers for a special focus session organized by the Thailand office of Plug and Play Tech Center. During the session, Charuwan and Gvavalin walked attendees through the latest legal developments applicable to innovative technologies in the smart cities sector, including: Artificial intelligence (AI), cloud services, and internet of things (IOT); Data protection updates from the recent PDPA public hearings; and Evolving cybersecurity regulations. The Plug and Play Tech Center in Bangkok is the local branch of global startup ecosystem and innovation hub helping entrepreneurs gain access to expertise, guidance, and structural support needed to grow their business. On June 16, 2022, Tilleke & Gibbins opened its Bangkok office for a press conference, executive meeting, and preview event for the upcoming Future Energy Asia & Future Mobility Asia Exhibition and Summit 2022. The event comprised three sessions—a media Q&A session, an executive committee meeting, and a networking cocktail reception and tour of the firm’s Museum of Counterfeit Goods. In the executive committee meeting, Joseph Tomkiewicz, partner and chair of the firm’s regional energy industry team (and member of the conference committee), was joined by high-profile representatives in the industry. Together they shared insights and discussed the future direction of the energy sector in Asia. The event concluded with a networking session and a tour of the firm’s well-known Museum of Counterfeit Goods. The opportunity to connect with other key players in the energy sector attracted top-level guests from leading organizations in Thailand and Southeast Asia, including the Ministry of Energy as well as BCPG, Bangkok Industrial Gas Company Limited, Energy Absolute, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, and Schneider Electric. The Future Energy Asia & Future Mobility Asia Exhibition and Summit 2022 will take place at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) on July 20–22.
