Tilleke & Gibbins, the largest independent law firm in Thailand, proudly announces the appointment of Alan Adcock, Nandana Indananda, and Thomas J. Treutler as Partners of the firm.

Alan Adcock is known for his “detailed knowledge of the law” (The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2010/2011), fluency in Mandarin, and outstanding client service. Alan represents diverse clients, from pioneers in the life sciences to the biggest IP owners in the world, and helps them achieve the dual goals of profit and protection in Asia. He specializes in IP acquisitions, technology transfer, IP contributions, clinical trials, IP licensing, IP enforcement, and regulatory affairs. Alan received his law degree from Columbia University and is licensed in New York and New Jersey.

Nandana Indananda served as Judge of the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court (2006-2008), Research Judge of the Supreme Court (Intellectual Property and International Trade Division) (2003-2006), and Judge attached to the Central Tax Court (1997-2003). A lawyer who commands the respect of colleagues, clients, and opposing parties, Nandana specializes in intellectual property, international commercial transactions, e-commerce, biotechnology, and information technology laws. He is a frequent contributor to definitive legal journals and lectures at top universities in Thailand.

Thomas J. Treutler is the managing director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices. Tom is fluent in Vietnamese and is registered to practice as a Foreign Lawyer in Vietnam. Tom is also licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and in California. Featured as a leading lawyer in Chambers Asia (2008-2010), Tom has expertise in both commercial law and IP enforcement. He has secured a number of landmark victories for foreign investors operating in the life sciences and technology sectors.

Eric Meyer, a foreign consultant in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department, was profiled in the latest issue of Thai-American Business (T-AB), the quarterly magazine of the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand (AMCHAM). As co-chair of the AMCHAM Legal Committee, Eric is extremely active in the American business community in Thailand. He applies his unique combination of legal expertise and practical awareness of business concerns in Thailand to identify topics and organize events that are interesting and relevant to a broad range of people. In the T-AB profile, Eric recounts how he came to be involved in AMCHAM after joining Tilleke & Gibbins four years ago, and notes that participation in the group has been an excellent way to stay current with the business community and build connections with professionals across various industries. In response to a question on the outlook for ease of doing business in Thailand, Eric sounded a hopeful note, explaining that the country’s strides in the areas of streamlining and digitizing various aspects of doing business should be able to continue after COVID-19, which has actually hastened digitization in several legal areas that had previously been slower to adapt to recent technological advances. An article in Global Restructuring Review on the Thai court’s approval of Thai Airways’ business rehabilitation plan features insights from John Frangos, partner and deputy director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department. The article reports that the airline’s rehabilitation plan has received court approval, over objections from two of the creditors. This step will now allow the airline—which has received over 13,000 debt repayment claims—to implement plan under the control of five administrators. John, who co-leads the firm’s regional aviation practice, explained a number of issues to the article’s author, including the Thai government’s unwillingness to bail out the financially troubled company, the challenges facing Thai Airways (and the Thai aviation industry as a whole) during the pandemic, and the historic nature of this bankruptcy case. John is representing many creditors of Thai Airways, and he shared their general reaction to the rehabilitation plan, noting that most were not necessary happy with it but did not object because they figured it was “the best deal they are going to get.” The full article is available on the Global Restructuring Review website.

On July 1, Jay Cohen, partner and director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ Cambodia practice, shared insights into Cambodia’s increasingly active solar energy market in a webinar organized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Jay’s presentation was titled “Solar Industry in Cambodia: Overview of Key Issues” and was featured as part of this larger webinar on solar parks and energy storage in the country. The presentation covered a wide range of topics, including the role of the state in Cambodia’s energy sector, the regulatory framework for the solar industry, licensing rules and concerns, resilient business models for solar energy enterprises, and investment incentives for solar energy entrepreneurs in Cambodia. Jay also identified the key government agencies that solar energy businesses need to deal with, discussed the intricacies of electricity tariffs, explained regulations for different types of energy consumers, and offered guidance on how the solar energy industry may develop in Cambodia in the coming years.

On June 24, Athistha (Nop) Chitranukroh, partner and director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ corporate and commercial group and head of the firm’s data privacy and cybersecurity team, joined and facilitated an online session entitled “Preparing and Implementing PDPA compliance policies in Thai companies.” Hosted in collaboration with True Digital Group and True Digital Park, subsidiaries of leading communication conglomerate True Corporation, the session provided insight on PDPA preparation and implementation from both legal and practical perspectives. Athistha led the discussion from the legal advisory side, including updates on the government’s decision to further postpone enforcement of the law, while Manita Kansap, a data privacy specialist from True Digital Group, provided insight from the perspective of an in-house implementer.
