Tilleke & Gibbins Helps Launch ASEAN LegalTech

Tilleke & Gibbins’ Technology Industry Group is pleased to announce the launch of ASEAN Legaltech—a multi-jurisdictional collaboration between law firms, legal practice management consultancies, and legaltech operators, aimed at growing the legal technology market in the ten ASEAN nations.

Tilleke & Gibbins has played a key role in establishing the organization, in which the firm’s Technology Industry Group heads, Athistha (Nop) Chitrankroh and Suebsiri Taeweepon, are both country ambassadors for Thailand, and the firm’s chief operating officer, Andrew Stoutley, is one of six founding members of the association’s regional board and executive committee.

LegalTech enables law firms and legal industry professionals to provide more efficient, modern solutions to clients through the application of innovative tech solutions, ranging from complex, cutting-edge AI document analysis, to simple but powerful knowledge management and training solutions. The ASEAN LegalTech Association is a platform to connect those involved in the promulgation and application of LegalTech to promote and build the LegalTech ecosystem in the Southeast Asian markets.

ASEAN LegalTech’s goal is to provide a voice to the emerging market to inform discussions with regulators in the ASEAN region by:

  • Building, connecting and growing a community for LegalTech in the ASEAN region through an online platform and monthly events (meet ups, legal hackathons, industry presentations, etc);
  • Starting the LegalTech dialogue in the ASEAN region and specifically in the region’s legal industry;
  • Building a platform to feature and cultivate the growth of the LegalTech scene in the ASEAN region; and,
  • Promoting entrepreneurial culture amongst legal industry constituents, namely lawyers (private practice and in-house lawyers), technologists and regulators.

On April 8, Tilleke & Gibbins took part in a webinar titled “Be Ready for the Thai PDPA,” cohosted by Cisco Systems. This virtual event aimed to assist businesses in preparing for enforcement of Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), which is set to take full effect in June 2022. In a presentation titled “Timeline, Regulations, and What’s to Come,” Nopparat Lalitkomon, a senior associate in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, outlined the key principles of the PDPA, considered the overall readiness of the country’s business community, and highlighted necessary steps that companies active in Thailand should take immediately as the law’s effective date draws closer. Nopparat concluded the session with practical advice to assist companies to manage their internal systems effectively to comply with the PDPA when it comes into force in June.

Tiziana Sucharitkul, managing partner and director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group, provided in-depth insights on diversity and inclusion and law firms for a recent article in Asia Business Law Journal (ABLJ) on diversity and inclusion in law firms across Asia. In the article, which was published on March 30, 2022, Tiziana offers insights gained in her years in senior leadership at Tilleke & Gibbins and as a longtime advocate for law firm diversity and inclusion initiatives. The article begins by contrasting the demand for greater diversity among Western law firms—especially by corporate counsel—with attitudes in Asia, where questions of expertise and service often take precedence when it comes to legal work. The writer then quickly shifts to investigating the reasons for this, as well as exploring the current state of diversity in the Asian legal industry today. This section of the article leads with Tiziana’s explanation that leadership of Asian law firms are in a very different context than the social tensions that catalyzed many diversity initiatives in the West. However, this does not necessarily mean that diverse representation has lagged in this part of the world. Rather, as Tiziana points out, “Southeast Asian countries have some of the highest proportions of women in senior business leadership in the world.” She also notes that markers such as gender diversity and respect for minority rights can vary widely across Asia. Elsewhere in the article, other senior law firm leaders express similar observations and provide details on the diversity challenges in their countries of focus. At the annual general meeting of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) on March 24, Pimvimol (June) Vipamaneerut, a partner in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, was elected as IPBA’s jurisdictional committee member for Thailand. In the role, Pimvimol will be responsible for membership issues in Thailand, and will be the key point of contact for matters concerning activities in the jurisdiction. She will serve as Thailand’s jurisdictional committee member for three years (2022–2025). The IPBA is a prestigious international association of business and commercial attorneys active or with a strong interest in the Pacific region. The IPBA has a membership of more than 1,500 legal professionals from over 65 countries and jurisdictions. Through its activities, the IPBA provides lawyers interested in the Asia-Pacific with opportunities to discuss legal, business, and policy issues affecting the region and grow in their legal practice through professional networking. In the webinar, Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate, and Gvavalin Mahakunkitchareon, associate, both the firm’s corporate and commercial group, were guest speakers jointly addressing a number of topics related to online gaming in Thailand, including: An overview of current laws and regulations on online gaming in Thailand; Recent and potential regulatory developments; Strategies for compliance with Thailand’s regulatory regime for online gaming; and Enforcement trends in Thailand. With the rising popularity of the online gaming industry, companies need to understand the regulatory framework fully before making any significant investment.
