Tilleke & Gibbins and EuroCham Vietnam to Hold Pharmaceutical Law Seminar in Ho Chi Minh City

Tilleke & Gibbins, together with EuroCham Vietnam, will hold a seminar focusing on legal issues in the pharmaceutical sector. The seminar will feature a panel of pharmaceutical and intellectual property experts from Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and it will provide attendees with an in-depth look at emerging issues in Vietnam’s rapidly developing pharmaceutical sector, including:

  • Intellectual property issues stemming from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
  • International models for effective pharmaceutical IP laws
  • Trends in patent litigation and brand protection
  • Changes in Vietnam’s new Law on Pharmacy
  • Best practices in compulsory licensing

Thomas J. Treutler, managing director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ Vietnam offices, will serve as moderator for the event and the closing panel discussion. Visiting experts Dr. Atsushi Shiomi from Tsukuni and Associates of Japan and Dr. Jakkrit Kuanpoth, of counsel in Tilleke & Gibbins’ IP group in Bangkok, will share best practices from abroad. Also representing Tilleke & Gibbins, Michael K. Lee will speak about Vietnam’s new Law on Pharmacy, while Linh Thi Mai Nguyen and Loc Xuan Le will discuss trends in pharma patent litigation and brand protection.

The event will take place at the Reverie Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City on October 18. Following the event in Ho Chi Minh City, Thomas and Jakkrit will speak at another pharma-related seminar in Hanoi on October 21 (location TBA). This seminar, organized by the British Embassy and EuroCham, will have an emphasis on intellectual property and compulsory patent licensing.

Ordering drugs from online pharmacies can be a risky ordeal. Not only can they cause serious harm to your health, but they may expose you to credit card fraud and put you in a difficult position with the Thai authorities. Dr. Atthachai Homhuan, manager of the Regulatory Affairs group at Tilleke & Gibbins, recently expressed his views on this subject in an interview arranged by The BigChilli magazine, in which he explained some of the pitfalls of dealing with online pharmacies.

Thailand’s guidelines for examining patents are in dire need of clarification. Thai patent examiners have been held back by unclear guidance, which has contributed toward long delays in examination and granting. In order to correct this issue, the Thai Patent Office is set to release updated guidelines for examining patents on September 30, covering pharmaceuticals and chemicals, as reported in a recent story by World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR).
