Textile Collection Event: The Influence of Indian Trade Textiles in Mainland Southeast Asia

On October 25, 2012, Dr. Linda S. McIntosh, consulting curator of the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection, will examine how Indian trade textiles have influenced handwoven textiles of mainland Southeast Asia, primarily Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. Three main types of textiles will be the focus of the presentation. These textile types are decorated with resistant mordant-dyed technique and drawing; double and weft ikat; and supplementary weft techniques. The trade textiles were consumed exclusively by the courts for centuries, but local versions began to be produced throughout the region. Examples of trade textiles and locally produced cloth from the Tilleke & Gibbins Textile Collection will be on display. This talk was first presented in April for the Textile Enthusiasts’ Group, Friends of the Museum, Singapore.

This Textile Collection presentation will be held at the Tilleke & Gibbins Auditorium at the firm’s Bangkok office from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on October 25. The event is free. For more information or to reserve a seat, please contact [email protected].
