Noppramart Thammateeradaycho to Moderate Session on Online Mediation

On September 3, 2020, Noppramart Thammateeradaycho, counsel in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department, will moderate a webinar on online mediation as a tool for dispute resolution. This session is the tenth installment of the THAC International ADR Webinar Series 2020, organized by the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC), and will feature discussion of how online technologies are being used in the resolution of conflicts and mediation of disputes.

Online mediation has been growing markedly as an alternative to in-person dispute resolution methods. While there have been questions and concerns about whether technological solutions can really substitute for the relationship-building and personal trust, mediators and disputing parties have turned to the benefits of online dispute resolution in increasing numbers. To meet the demand, there has been a proliferation of online mediation services in the market, driven by the advancement of technological capabilities—and more recently by restrictions on travel and physical meetings.

This webinar will discuss the upward trend of online mediation across the globe, consider the growth in online mediation services, and give suggestions for how this expansion can benefit parties in the mediation process. Joining Noppramart will be Abinash Barik of the Asian International Arbitration Centre in Malaysia.

The THAC International ADR Webinar Series 2020, which runs from late July through mid-September, presents various views and analyses of ADR techniques and procedures, as well as insight into the latest developments in ADR.

On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military declared a state of emergency in the country and took control of the government, arresting State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and other senior government officials from the National League for Democracy. The seizure of power, and the government’s subsequent actions to suppress public protest and dissent, have received widespread international condemnation.  The USA, Canada, and the UK have reacted by imposing economic sanctions on certain companies and individuals, and more sanctions are expected as the situation in Myanmar evolves. These sanctions pose a major concern for foreign investors with interests in Myanmar—concern which is exacerbated by the lack of clarity about the current situation on the ground. With over 12 years of professional legal experience, including almost eight in Vietnam, Sarah focuses primarily on matters of employment and labor law, as well as compliance and dispute resolution. Sarah was previously the associate director of KPMG Legal in Ho Chi Minh City, and an associate with Baker & McKenzie. A native of Canada, where she is a licensed barrister and solicitor, Sarah began her legal career with Fraser Milner Casgrain in Vancouver (now Dentons Canada) before moving to Vietnam. In the webinar, which is part of a series from the Centre for International Dispute Resolution, Noppramart will share insights gained from her extensive international arbitration experience in Thailand and the region.
