Nandana Indananda Featured in Article on ASEAN Law Association Meeting

Nandana Indananda, a partner in Tilleke & Gibbins’ intellectual property practice, was interviewed by the Thai Post for their recent article about the ASEAN Law Association (ALA) Governing Council Meeting, which took place on November 21–22 in Phuket. Nandana, who is also vice president of the Lawyer’s Council of Thailand’s (LCT) subcommittee on foreign affairs, was joined at the event by Waralee Sripawadkul, attorney-at-law in the firm’s intellectual property group. Together they represented Tilleke & Gibbins at the two-day meeting.

The Thai Post article summarized the meeting, which was organized to promote collaboration between lawyers in ASEAN countries and foster cooperation for arbitration and dispute resolution in the region. Participants included judges (Nandana is himself a former judge of the Intellectual Property and International Trade Court), attorneys, representatives from the Office of the Attorney General, public prosecutors, legal professors, and others.

The newspaper went on to interview Nandana about the LCT and the role of law firms in general in Thai society. Nandana explained that the LCT oversees attorneys and law firms to ensure that they uphold professional standards. He also discussed the activities of law firms in providing legal consultation, particularly for business owners who would like to operate in Thailand and ASEAN countries. He emphasized that being equipped with legal knowledge of each jurisdiction is crucial for investors and entrepreneurs looking to do business in other countries, and he brought up the work Tilleke & Gibbins does advising on trading, investment, intellectual property registration and much more for Thai and foreign business owners who would like to expand their business operations to new locales.

Finally, Nandana noted how the LCT and law firms in Thailand give back to society through pro bono services for Thais and expats in need and by providing legal advice to foundations and NGOs.

On October 13, Alan Adcock, partner and deputy director of the firm’s intellectual property and regulatory affairs groups in Bangkok, and Thomas J. Treutler, managing director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ offices in Vietnam, represented the firm in the virtual IP Life Sciences Conference 2021. Life sciences specialists from around the world attended the conference, which was organized to provide patent owners in the life sciences industry with pertinent information and updates relating to patent disputes and litigation in key jurisdictions. On Thursday, October 21, 2021, two attorneys from the intellectual property department in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Bangkok office will present a Thai-language webinar on the importance of trademarks for garment manufacturers. Ploynapa Julagasigorn, senior associate, and Waralee Sripawadkul, associate, will team up to address trademark registration in Thailand and abroad. In the first part of the webinar, Ploynapa will cover trademark registration in Thailand, focusing especially on the importance of trademark registration, legal rights, distinctive qualities of successful trademarks, procedures, registration duration, and enforcement.  She will also outline procedures in civil trials, criminal trials, and alternative dispute resolution. Waralee will then present on trademark registration in other countries. She will explain the importance of a trademark validation outside of Thailand, discuss application requirements, advise on how to properly prepare an application, and share practical advice on issues that brand owners should be aware of. This webinar, which is organized in conjunction with the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association (TGMA), will provide brand owners with a clear understanding of how to acquire trademark protection in order to fully protect their intellectual property in Thailand and internationally. On October 5, Dutsadee Dutsadeepanich, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department, appeared as a guest speaker in the ADR Webinar Series 2021 organized by the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) to discuss the growth of arbitration in Asia. Titled “The Rise of Arbitration in Asia,” the session featured Dutsadee and other panelists discussing the following topics: International investment protection; Potential international investment disputes concerning Southeast Asia’s projects related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative; and Advantages of alternative dispute resolution as an effective approach for fast and fair legal treatment. In her remarks, Dutsadee provided a clear overview of significant developments in arbitration in Asia, and how key players in arbitration can adapt to the changing circumstances.
