John Frangos to Speak at SCCE’s 2019 Regional Compliance and Ethics Conference

On July 12, 2019, John Frangos, partner and deputy director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution group, will speak at a Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) conference in Bangkok Thailand. The one-day conference, entitled “Regional Compliance and Ethics,” will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to learn from and interact with industry-leading compliance professionals, and to discuss real-life compliance successes and challenges.

John’s presentation will focus on the practical implications of Thailand’s Organic Act on Counter Corruption for the private sector, and the National Counter Corruption Commission’s Internal Control Guidelines, highlighted by case studies from his extensive hands-on experience with compliance and counter-corruption work in the jurisdiction. In addition to John, the event will see presentations from six other notable compliance professionals from Thailand and around the world.

Held at the Grand Hyatt Erawan in Bangkok, this event is open to SCCE members and non-members alike (registration required). Tiziana Sucharitkul, co-managing partner of Tilleke & Gibbins and director of the firm’s dispute resolution department, spoke in two International Bar Association (IBA) webinars on law firm management and strategic direction. Tiziana appeared in her capacity as a member of the IBA Law Firm Management Committee, first in an IBA Global Showcase session on October 28, 2021, and then again at an IBA Officers’ Briefing on November 9. The first event brought together two panels of law firm managing partners from around the world to discuss the matters of greatest concern to the legal industry in a session titled “What is the Future of our Law Firms?” Together, the panelists discussed issued such as the return to physical offices, how best to serve clients, how to encourage and support collaboration among lawyers, and what pricing strategies will look like in the future. This session formed part of the week-long IBA Global Showcase—a global conference sharing knowledge and celebrating successes in law firm policy and practice. In the second session, open only to officers of the IBA, Tiziana was one of three guests interviewed about law firm transitions and strategy. Alongside managing partners from leading firms in India and the USA, Tiziana discussed how established family-run firms can evolve into regional powerhouses, taking examples from her own experience with Tilleke & Gibbins’ regionalization and growth over the past two decades. On October 27, Noppramart Thammateeradaycho, counsel in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Bangkok office, gave a presentation on enforcement of arbitral awards in Thailand and Vietnam in a webinar organized by the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). This particular webinar was the ninth installment of the SIAC Academy’s “Enforcement of Arbitral Awards in Asia: Theory & Practice” series, which outlines arbitration law in various Asian jurisdictions and enlists local specialists to share practical understanding of how these laws are applied to the enforcement of arbitral awards. During Noppramart’s presentation, she was joined by fellow arbitration experts to present detailed information on relevant legislation, definitions, procedures, grounds for annulment or nonenforcement of an award, and notable examples of the Thai judiciary’s treatment of arbitral awards.

On October 5, Dutsadee Dutsadeepanich, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department, appeared as a guest speaker in the ADR Webinar Series 2021 organized by the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) to discuss the growth of arbitration in Asia. Titled “The Rise of Arbitration in Asia,” the session featured Dutsadee and other panelists discussing the following topics: International investment protection; Potential international investment disputes concerning Southeast Asia’s projects related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative; and Advantages of alternative dispute resolution as an effective approach for fast and fair legal treatment. In her remarks, Dutsadee provided a clear overview of significant developments in arbitration in Asia, and how key players in arbitration can adapt to the changing circumstances.

On October 5, 2021, Dutsadee Dutsadeepanich, an associate in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution department in Bangkok, spoke in a webinar titled “The Rise of Arbitration in Asia.” Cohosted by the Thailand Arbitration Center (THAC) and the Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam (AABD), the online panel will share information and perspectives on arbitration in Asia—especially in relation the recent global growth of arbitration cases, which has been seen both in traditional arbitration centers such as Singapore and Hong Kong, and in other Asian jurisdictions offering arbitration expertise. The panel brought together six Asian arbitration specialists, including Dutsadee, who is currently the secretary of the Thailand branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is Thailand’s only representative on the Young Arbitrators Forum of the International Chamber of Commerce. Together the speakers led a comprehensive and wide-ranging discussion on developments and trends related to arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in Asia, with particular consideration of commercial arbitration, investor-state arbitration, and international commercial court proceedings. THAC and AABD are national-level arbitration organizations and are members of the Asia Pacific Regional Arbitration Group.
