Crossing International Boundaries: Swedish Newspaper Features Museum of Counterfeit Goods

The Tilleke & Gibbins Museum of Counterfeit Goods has been featured in Svenska Dagbladet, a widely circulated newspaper published on a daily basis in Sweden. The article examines intellectual property infringement through the eyes of a Swedish journalist, as he presents his experiences while traveling throughout many parts of Thailand. Like many tourists, he encounters a plethora of pirated goods sold at prices that are truly too good to be true.

As part of the journalist’s research, he interviewed IP enforcement specialist Titirat Wattanachewanopakorn, an attorney-at-law in the Tilleke & Gibbins intellectual property group. The topic of discussion focused on the hazards associated with counterfeiting, and Tilleke & Gibbins’ long-term fight against piracy. Commenting on the museum and its collection of goods, the article commends it as being “a real eye-opener” for visitors who wish to learn about the depth and breadth of intellectual property infringement in Thailand.

The Tilleke & Gibbins Museum of Counterfeit Goods has been featured in the latest issue of Tropical magazine. James Evans, a consultant with the firm’s IP group, was interviewed for the article. James described the presence of counterfeit goods as a “middle-class” problem, while also citing Thailand as the second-largest source of counterfeit goods worldwide. The article states that counterfeit goods represent “USD 600 billion in losses” and “the loss of over 100,000 jobs in Europe yearly.”
