Asia IP: Tilleke & Gibbins’ Lawyers Discuss Online Piracy of Movies

Asia IP

Hong Kong-based legal magazine, Asia IP, has quoted two of Tilleke & Gibbins’ lawyers in a special feature on “Moviemakers Battle Online Pirates.” Their comments were included in the March edition of the magazine.

Suebsiri Taweepon, an attorney-at-law in the intellectual property department at Tilleke & Gibbins, was quoted as saying, “IP rights enforcement in Thailand, with regard to films and the entertainment industry, is reasonably good.” He said that, according to the Thai Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, the counterfeit products that were most seized by the Customs Department in 2013 were CDs, VCDs, and DVDs, with an approximate value of THB 20 million.

Yuwadee Thean-ngarm, a consultant in Tilleke & Gibbins’ Yangon office, was quoted for her views on online piracy of movies in Myanmar. “We find that some Myanmar producers occasionally copy and produce the same script from foreign films, especially in the music industry, but no action is taken by the authorities or relevant associations, she said. “Due to the limitations on protection for films in Myanmar, film investors and businesses joined to set up the Myanmar Motion Pictures Association (MMPA).” Commenting on the MMPA’s function, Yuwadee said, “at the request of members, the MMPA takes action, in collaboration with the relevant government entities, against copyright infringement in films.”
