Andrew Stoutley Quoted in Article on How Law Firms Are Adapting to COVID-19

Andrew Stoutley, chief operating officer of Tilleke & Gibbins, was quoted by Asian Legal Business  (ALB ) in a recent article looking at the ways law firms in Southeast Asia are returning to the office after the extended period of working from home during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak. The magazine interviewed a number of partners and executives from firms across Southeast Asia to understand the pacing and procedures that law firms are following as they explore their options during this time of uncertainty.

All of the firms reported that they were able to successfully continue their work even with most or all of their personnel working from home. While approaches for moving ahead understandably vary somewhat based on the conditions in each country, firms are generally in the process of shifting back to full office staffing, or are planning to do so as soon as it becomes safe to do so.

Andrew explains in the article that Tilleke & Gibbins’ team members who had been working from home during the crisis were now gradually coming back to work at the office on a fixed rotation schedule. However, he emphasized that this has been happening in a very controlled process: “The firm does not see any reason to rush the return to the office, given how well it has adapted to remote working on such a wide scale.”

Tilleke & Gibbins partners in the firm’s Bangkok and Hanoi offices were quoted in Lex Mundi’s newly released Global M&A Trends Report 2022. The report covers notable trends, issues, and forecasts for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) around the world. Kobkit Thienpreecha, partner and director of Tilleke & Gibbins’ corporate and commercial department, was sought out for his comments on the M&A picture in Thailand, while Thomas Treutler, partner and managing director of the firm’s Vietnam offices, gave his insights into the M&A landscape in Vietnam. The Global M&A Trends Report 2022 was produced by the Lex Mundi Cross-Border Transactions Group, and it analyzes M&A deal activity by sector and market. Overall, the report, which compiles market intelligence from practitioners in 66 jurisdictions, finds that 2021 was a record year for M&A deal activity and that most jurisdictions expect to see a similarly active environment in 2022. Noppramart Thammateeradaycho, a counsel in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution practice, has been appointed as an arbitrator by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA). Noppramart is a recognized leader in international arbitration in the region, with special experience in arbitration of disputes involving the maritime, transportation, insurance, and construction sectors. Her term as an arbitrator will run until February 20, 2025. The SCIA, which was established in 1983 as China was undergoing economic reforms and liberalization, was the first arbitration institution in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. On February 8, Nopparat Lalitkomon, senior associate, and Thammapas Chanpanich, associate, both in the firm’s corporate and commercial group in Bangkok, delivered a joint Thai-language webinar entitled “Personal Data Protection Guidelines for Insurance Industry.” During the session, the speakers focused on the relevance of the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA)—which is expected to come into force on June 1, 2022—to the insurance industry. Specifically, they discussed the following topics: Key principles of personal data collection; Scope of establishing the principle of legality for insurance companies; Notification of data collection and data processing activities in accordance with the law; Procedures of execution between insurance companies and their counterparties; and Managing personal data collected prior to the effective date of the PDPA.
