John E. King is a U.S.-licensed attorney and a partner in Tilleke & Gibbins’ dispute resolution and litigation group. Listed as a leading lawyer by Practical Law Co. and Asialaw, John provides no-nonsense counsel on critical issues faced by corporate and individual clients doing business in Southeast Asia. John’s practice is diverse, having represented clients in tough cases involving heavy industry, unions, asset recovery, white-collar crime, product liability, and bet-the-company matters.

A common sense practitioner with an international legal background, John was instrumental in building Tilleke & Gibbins’ successful Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices, where he served as managing director from 2007 to 2010. He currently leads the firm’s pro bono initiatives and acts as the firm’s representative to TrustLaw, a global hub for free legal assistance created by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. John is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

A University of Minnesota alumnus, John earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) with high distinction (Order of the Coif) and practiced banking and finance law at Leonard, Street & Deinard, a leading U.S. law firm, prior to joining Tilleke & Gibbins.

  • Represented the supplier of an aviation system against a state enterprise in pre-litigation negotiations pertaining to the breach of a supply contract.

  • Represented a Hong Kong construction conglomerate in a contentious business deal with its Thai joint venture partner, which led to civil lawsuits, cross-border arbitration, and a government investigation into the acts of the JV partner and a related state enterprise.

  • Protected our client’s reputation by preparing a claim against an opposing party for defamation and negotiating a successful settlement of the dispute.

  • Collected electronic evidence of defamatory statements against our client’s business. We filed a civil claim against the opposing party and reached a successful out-of-court settlement.

  • Represented a client in a bankruptcy case. Our representation included providing legal advice, preparing and submitting a petition for an absolute receivership order and the debt repayment application, attending various meetings with the official receiver, and attending court hearings.

  • Prosecuted and defended various complex civil and criminal actions related to breach of contract, wrongful acts, undue enrichment, fraud, and attempted fraud on behalf of our client.

  • Defended clients against criminal charges related to work permit issues, including providing legal advice, assisting clients at inquiry meetings with police officials, attending court hearings, and assisting with the immigration process.
