Asia Employment Law: Quarterly Review – Fourth Quarter 2020

Tilleke & Gibbins has contributed the Thailand section to Asia Employment Law: Quarterly Review, an initiative by Mayer Brown that brings together top firms from fifteen jurisdictions across Asia to comment on developments in employment laws and regulations in each country.

The issue for the fourth quarter of 2020 looks back at significant changes from the past year, and is especially exhaustive this year as the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic triggered many regulatory changes and relief measures—in addition to the usual updates and adjustments reported on in the Asia Employment Law: Quarterly Review.

The Thailand section addresses various measures and restrictions, such as multiple changes to social security contributions, a prohibition on lockouts and strikes for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, and measures addressing visa and immigration issues. Various updates are also covered, including a new minimum wage scale and measures related to the Personal Data Protection Act, which is expected to come into force in June 2021.
