Biography

Witchupong Chittchang is a senior associate at Tilleke Gibbins specializing in commercial, regulatory, transactional, and dispute resolution matters for clients in the insurance and maritime industries. In addition to his insurance and maritime practice, Witchupong is a trusted advisor on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters in Thailand, including commercial contracts, construction and real estate, customs, employment, logistics, and general regulatory compliance matters.

Prior to joining Tilleke & Gibbins, Witchupong worked at a boutique insurance and maritime law firm in Thailand for over 15 years. He obtained an LLB from Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, and an LLM in International Trade at the University of Queensland in Australia. Recognized as an expert on insurance and maritime law in Thailand, Witchupong has been welcomed as a guest lecturer for courses offered by Burapha University and the Thai General Insurance Association.

Witchupong holds a lawyer’s license from the Lawyers Council of Thailand and is a qualified notarial services attorney.


Experience
  • Assisted foreign carriers in a series of maritime claims arising from ship sinking and fallen containers in southern Thailand.
  • Assisted insurers and Airports of Thailand (AOT) in handling various claims (e.g., bird strikes, contingency accidents, and runway skid-offs) against AOT and the liability insurers under the airport liability insurance policy.
  • Represented a power plant company to successfully claim and lodge a lawsuit against an insurer in relation to a power generator explosion that was under an advance loss of profit policy (ALOP).
  • Represented an insurer in successfully defending against a bad-faith claim by the insured under a fire insurance policy in southern Thailand and successfully proved a terrorism exclusion.
  • Represented multiple P&I clubs and vessel owners in Thailand for various maritime casualties, (e.g., ship collision, man overboard, oil spill, etc.).
