Nga Thi Phi Nguyen, a Vietnam‐qualified intellectual property agent and registered attorney-at-law, heads the firm’s Vietnam intellectual property group. She has over 18 years of experience in all areas of IP work (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright, unfair competition) and other related issues including prosecution, opinions, counseling, litigation, and licensing. On the basis of this experience, Nga has been recognized as a leading lawyer in IP in Vietnam by Asialaw Leading Lawyers and Practical Law Co.

Nga was formerly responsible for enforcement work at one of the major IP agencies in Vietnam and has a deep understanding of the enforcement of IP rights. She has handled hundreds of IP infringement cases and assisted a number of well‐known brand owners in enforcement of their IP rights in Vietnam. Aside from her legal practice, she participates in IP research and lecturing activities in Vietnam and overseas.

Nga is a member of Hanoi Bar Association, Vietnam Industrial Property Association, and the Vietnam Lawyers’ Association. She holds a diploma in IP law from the Institute of Intellectual Property of the Federation of Russia and an advanced IP lawyer training certificate from the Japanese Patent Office. She was awarded an Australian Development Scholarship by the Australian government and earned an LL.M. at the University of Melbourne.

  • Secured on behalf of a major European apparel label the assessment of substantial fines (approximately USD 50,000) on infringers producing counterfeit shirts and shoes. 

  • Achieved a victory for an English holder of a famous restaurant brand against the NOIP’s refusal due to misleading consumers about the origin of goods and services. The success may allow the owner to register its trademark in Vietnam.

  • Represented a major entertainment brand owner in the cancellation of a third party’s trademarks that are similar to the client’s well known brand in Cambodia and in stopping the third party from using the mark for its hotel and casino services.

  • Investigated the prevalence of trademark infringement of a global apparel brand in Ho Chi Minh City.

  • Acted for a U.S. rice company in a trademark dispute in relation to genetic rice varieties and generic/geographical name issues. The representation included obtaining expert evidence from a rice geneticist and working closely with local authorities.

  • Represented a major European appliance producer in a trademark infringement and unfair competition case in which a Vietnamese appliance maker falsely claimed that its products contained components produced by our client.

  • Obtained several of the largest settlements in Vietnam IPR history in multiple copyright infringement actions.

  • Obtained an expert opinion on an agrochemical patent infringement in favor of the patent owner in a landmark case in Vietnam.

  • Negotiated a trademark assignment agreement between the client and its distributor in Vietnam. Our representation included drafting the agreement and advising on the recordal of same.
