Government Relations

For clients across industries, our Government Relations team serves as an advocate, a coalition builder, a negotiator, and an ally.

Our group includes top practitioners in a number of tightly regulated industries including pharmaceuticals, agriculture, banking and finance, and telecommunications. We help our clients focus their relationship-building efforts on the key government agencies and personnel responsible for their industry. Utilizing targeted strategies, we promote regulatory landscapes that produce tangible business benefits.

Our team has strong relationships with leaders who shape policy and its enforcement, from public servants in diverse roles and at all levels to influential members of society. But we bring more to the table than governmental goodwill; we bring our strengths in identifying common goals and coalition building. We are, at the same time, grassroots campaigners and high-level strategists. We create and maintain advantageous alliances for our clients with governmental agencies, independent organizations, competitors, and/or other interested parties. In collaboration with other stakeholders, we influence government policy.

We offer the following examples of our government relations activities and capabilities. Tilleke & Gibbins has:

  • Represented a leading producer of smartphones as its "point of contact" with all government authorities, which involved crafting an overall government relations strategy, establishing and cultivating relationships with officials, responding to government investigations, monitoring potential policy and regulatory developments, and seeking legislative and regulatory change on our client’s behalf. We have also structured appropriate and effective solutions to the business and legal challenges faced by our client.

  • Planned and executed a defensive strategy on behalf of a group of global pharmaceutical companies in response to the imposition of compulsory licenses on patented medications by the Royal Thai Government’s Ministry of Public Health.

  • Conducted Thai Customs Department and Police training for numerous clients across a range of industries including auto parts, fashion, tobacco, spirits, software, and others. We use such events as an opportunity to share international best practices, specific product training, and develop relationships with key Customs officials as well as local officers.

  • Advised a U.S. transportation company on their dealings with the Royal Thai Army during the course of a government procurement contract.

  • Advised a pharmaceutical client on various IP issues, such as product liability, government advocacy on new regulations, compulsory licenses, new laws (Patent Act, Drug Act), and trademark registration.

  • Liaised with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) on behalf of our client, an operator of a social-media website, to ensure compliance with the Computer Crime Act and, as a result, successfully prevented the website from being banned by the MICT.

  • Advised a leader in wireless technology on government authorities related to the telecommunications industry.
